Lake Avenue Church
VA Scope: Acoustical Consultation and Audio-Visual Design

Location:
Pasadena, CA
Design Team: Barasch Architects
Completion: 1988
Cost $20 million
Lake Avenue Church is located adjacent to the new MTA Gold Line and the 210 Freeway, which posed environmental noise challenges. The most recent expansion included a multi-purpose sanctuary seating 4,200 and the four-story Family Life Center which contains a gymnasium, numerous classrooms, and music department facilities.
Veneklasen Associates provided complete acoustical and audio-visual design services. The main sanctuary has many features that are unique including a motorized pit-lift, performing balconies, and a baptistery which is concealed behind a central screen. The sanctuary is used for three major worship services ranging from contemporary, transitional and traditional.
Suspended over the chancel, just the right of the cross, is a column loudspeaker, which services the entire sanctuary. It is used for speech reinforcement as well as producing the high sound levels required for Christian contemporary rock music.
The main sanctuary also features a Cassavant pipe organ with over 8,000 pipes, which is used to accompany all worship services and for major recitals.
